Celebrating excellence in breastfeeding support

In honor of World Breastfeeding Week (August 1-7, 2025), Valley Regional Medical Center proudly recognizes the outstanding dedication of its lactation consultants and educators—true champions for mothers and their babies during one of life’s most meaningful journeys.

While breastfeeding is a natural process, it often comes with challenges, especially in the early days. That’s why Valley Regional Medical Center’s expert team provides compassionate, bilingual and personalized care to support families every step of the way. Services include:

  • Bilingual breastfeeding classes to empower and educate new parents
  • Follow-up calls for every postpartum mother to ensure continued support during their first days at home
  • One-on-one lactation counseling, available during and after hospital stays—completely free of charge
  • Specialized NICU support to help even the tiniest patients latch before going home

In addition to direct patient care, Valley Regional Medical Center is proud to serve as Brownsville’s only breastmilk collection depot, in partnership with the Mother’s Milk Bank of Austin. Since 2015, generous local donors have contributed nearly 6,000 ounces of breastmilk annually, providing life-saving nutrition to preterm and critically ill infants across Texas.

“Breastfeeding support is about more than nutrition—it’s about nurturing confidence, connection and community,” said Laura Muniz, an International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) at Valley Regional Medical Center. “We’re honored to walk alongside families and help give every baby the healthiest start possible.”

World Breastfeeding Week is celebrated every year in the first week of August. It’s a time to recognize breastfeeding as a powerful foundation for lifelong health, development and equity and to spotlight the ongoing support women and babies need through their breastfeeding journey.

“To all the mothers, donors and educators who make this work possible: thank you for your unwavering commitment to infant health,” praised Kim Vergara, chief nursing officer at Valley Regional Medical Center.
