CPR training, coordinated emergency response save South Texas man after cardiac arrest

When Francisco Briones suffered a sudden cardiac arrest at work earlier this year, every second counted — and a chain of lifesaving actions by coworkers, first responders and hospital teams helped ensure he survived.

Briones was recently reunited at Valley Regional Medical Center with the people who played a role in saving his life, from the coworkers who immediately began CPR to the EMS professionals and hospital caregivers who continued critical treatment every step of the way.

What makes the story especially remarkable is that Briones’ coworkers had completed hands-only CPR training just four days before the emergency occurred as part of a workplace safety program. The recent training gave them the confidence to recognize the emergency and act quickly until first responders arrived.

EMS teams provided lifesaving care on scene and during transport while the emergency department team prepared for Briones’ arrival and continued advanced treatment without delay. Physicians later identified blockages that led to the cardiac arrest and placed stents to restore blood flow. After his discharge, Briones also participated in a cardiac rehabilitation program, which helped strengthen his recovery and support his return to daily life.

“This reunion is a powerful reminder of what can happen when bystanders, EMS professionals and hospital teams work together seamlessly during a crisis,” said Dr. Guillermo Salinas, interventional cardiologist.
