Giving birth is one of life's most momentous events, and we're here to make your experience comfortable and special at every phase.

Valley Regional Medical Center has welcomed thousands of babies into the world over the decades, and offers everything you need for a healthy pregnancy and delivery. From specialized care for high-risk pregnancies to treatment for premature and sick babies, we've got you covered.

Brownsville labor and delivery services

Our labor and delivery care team includes board-certified obstetricians and 24/7 access to maternal-fetal medicine specialists, neonatal nurse practitioners, board-certified neonatologists and anesthesiologists.

We are proud recipients of the 2023 Labor and Delivery Excellence Award from Healthgrades, which recognizes our superior clinical care of women during and after childbirth. Our services include 24-hour access to epidural pain management during delivery. After delivery, we support rooming-in, where your baby will be kept in your room as much as possible to encourage the bonding experience between mom and baby with skin-to-skin contact during the first hour of life.

We provide comprehensive breastfeeding support, including lactation consultants, to help you during the first few feedings and additional support once you go home. Additionally, our hospital serves as a donation site for human breast milk in partnership with The Mothers’ Milk Bank at Austin. This means we collect and distribute prescribed breast milk donations to help feed premature and critically ill babies throughout the Texas Rio Grande Valley and beyond.

Maternity classes and hospital tours

Our hospital is proud to offer free childbirth classes to help expectant parents prepare for the arrival of their new baby. Our experienced educators offer support through prenatal classes and breastfeeding counseling classes, infant CPR classes, and the Big Brother/Big Sister preparation class.

Many classes are offered in English and Spanish. The prenatal class includes a tour of our labor and delivery unit. To learn more information and register for classes, call (956) 350-7235. Breastfeeding classes are offered on the third Wednesday of the month in partnership with the Infant and Family Nutrition Agency. To register for breastfeeding classes, call (956) 561-6455.

To take an in-person tour of our facility and view our mother-baby suites and amenities, call (956) 350-7745.

Neonatal intensive care

We are dedicated to helping babies get home sooner. Our hospital provides specialized neonatal care for premature and critically ill babies at our Level III Neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The NICU is staffed around the clock by highly trained neonatologists, neonatal nurses and respiratory therapists, so we are always ready to provide quality care in an emergency. In the case that your baby needs to be transferred to a higher-level NICU, we provide neonatal transport to get them safely there.
