Diabetes Education in Schools

Diabetes is the #1 health issue in the Rio Grande Valley. To make sure kids get diagnosed early, Valley Regional Medical Center offers free diabetic screenings to schools in the Brownsville, TX area.

Parents will be told about the programs and sent consent forms for their children to participate in the screening. On the day Valley Regional comes to their school, kids with signed consent forms will receive a free diabetes assessment.

Parents are contacted to bring their child into the diabetes outpatient clinic if the child is found to have diabetes or be at high risk. We have special diabetes classes just for kids, and we mail the results of all diabetes screenings to parents even if their kids don’t attend the classes.

The hospital’s diabetes school program currently partners with four local school districts:

  • Los Fresnos Consolidated School District
  • Brownsville Independent School District
  • Point Isabel School District
  • IDEA Public Schools
