Employees at Valley Regional Medical Center Believe in Giving to Others

Brownsville, Texas, December 23rd, 2013—Employees at Valley Regional Medical believe giving to others is the best way to spend the holiday season. For  more than 28 years, Sostenes Mireles, Laboratory Services Director and fellow employees have spent the winter holidays helping those in need.

“Over 28 years ago, we decided a perfect way to celebrate Christmas would be to raise money for a family in need, but we weren’t sure how to find the right family,” says Sostenes.  “We worked with local school principals to refer us to families they felt needed the most help.” Everyone in the VRMC laboratory participated through buying groceries and presents, gift-wrapping items, or making financial donations. Employees then delivered the items to the designated family in need.

“We couldn’t believe how excited the family members were when they saw the food and presents,” says Sostenes. ‘They were crying tears of joy and many of us were crying as well. Since that first year, we have continued this tradition along with employees from other hospital departments allowing even more families to benefit. The City of Brownsville is split into three zones and a committee is assigned to contact a church in that particular zone to work with the priest, pastor, reverend, or administrative personnel of that parish to recommend a family. We are helping to make the season a little brighter for families in need”.
