The Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation and HCA Healthcare Gulf Coast Division are proud to announce the expansion of the Raising a Reader program to Valley Regional Medical Center (VRMC) in Brownsville and Rio Grande Regional Hospital (RGRH) in McAllen. This initiative is designed to give babies a strong, healthy start by equipping new parents with tools and information to support their child’s brain development and early learning. With this expansion, more than 2,000 new parents will benefit from the program.

“As physicians caring for the tiniest and most vulnerable babies in our community, our mission is to ensure optimal growth and neurodevelopment from the very start,” said Melissa Tilley, neonatologist. “We want every child born here to thrive and reach their fullest potential. By partnering with the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation, we empower families to embrace the importance of early literacy—beginning in infancy. This family-centered approach reflects our hospital’s dedication to the long-term success and well-being of our youngest patients.”

The Raising a Reader program first launched in the Greater Houston area in November 2023 at HCA Houston Healthcare Clear Lake and HCA Houston Healthcare West. The Women’s Hospital of Texas adopted the program in 2024, followed by HCA Houston Healthcare Tomball in 2025. With the addition of Corpus Christi Medical Center, Rio Grande Regional Hospital and Valley Regional Medical Center, the program is expected to serve more than 25,000 newborns and their families annually.

New parents will receive a literacy bag that includes:

  • An indestructible book
  • A brochure with suggested activities to foster brain development and early literacy
  • A “prescription” to read to their baby for at least 15 minutes each day
  • Information about Brownsville and McAllen public library resources

“The Brownsville Public Library is excited to be a partner in the Raising a Reader Program,” said Kayla Trevino, City of Brownsville librarian. “We know it's never too early to share stories and strengthen family bonds. Library cards are available for children and adults of all ages. Even newborns can get their own library card. We can't wait to welcome new families and help them grow together through books and library events.”

Before discharge, a member of the patient’s healthcare team will consult with new mothers to introduce Raising a Reader resources, ensuring families are equipped to begin their journey toward building a strong foundation for their child’s future.
