The community is invited to Valley Regional Medical Center’s Annual Diabetes Awareness Event on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, at Sunrise Mall Food Court. The event is dedicated to raising awareness, providing education and offering resources for individuals at risk for diabetes or those already diagnosed.

Free health screenings — including blood glucose and blood pressure checks — will be available from 8:30am to 11:00am. No fasting is required to participate. The first 30 attendees will receive a free glucometer, and all participants will receive a complimentary exercise band to encourage daily stretching and physical activity.

“Diabetes affects millions of families, and awareness is the first step toward prevention and management,” said Rosary Muniz, nurse practitioner and certified diabetes care and education specialist. “We invite everyone in the community to take advantage of this free event and empower themselves with knowledge and tools for better health.”

According to the American Diabetes Association, approximately 12.4% of adults in Texas have been diagnosed with diabetes — a rate higher than the national average. Additionally, an estimated 647,000 Texans are living with undiagnosed diabetes, and more than 6 million have prediabetes. These numbers reflect a growing public health concern, especially in underserved communities where access to care and education may be limited.

This event is open to the public and aims to empower individuals with knowledge and tools to manage and prevent diabetes.

Valley Regional Medical Center’s Diabetes Management Center is proud to offer a nationally accredited diabetes education program, recognized by the American Association of Diabetes Care and Education Specialists (ADCES). This accreditation ensures that individuals living with diabetes in Brownsville and the surrounding communities have access to high-quality, evidence-based education and support.
