Valley Regional Medical Center brought together cardiac arrest survivor Victor Rodriguez with the people who helped save his life during a special lifesaver reunion held Thursday, February 26. The event reunited Rodriguez with the bystander who began hands-only CPR, Brownsville Fire and EMS paramedics and the hospital teams who cared for him from the emergency department through recovery.

Rodriguez and his wife, Maria, had just arrived at a Brownsville restaurant in September 2025 when he suddenly suffered cardiac arrest. Bystander Gabriela Camacho immediately began hands-only CPR while others called 9-1-1. Camacho continued CPR for nearly 10 minutes until Brownsville Fire and EMS arrived within six minutes of the emergency call.

Paramedics quickly stabilized Rodriguez and transported him to Valley Regional Medical Center within 13 minutes, where emergency physicians rapidly activated the hospital’s cardiac catheterization team to provide advanced cardiac care.

Following emergency treatment and hospitalization, Rodriguez continued his recovery through cardiac rehabilitation. Today, he continues to regain strength and improve his heart health.

“Mr. Rodriguez survived a sudden cardiac arrest because every link in the chain of survival worked — a bystander immediately started CPR, EMS responded rapidly and our hospital team was ready to deliver advanced cardiac care,” said Dr. Jaime Silva, interventional cardiologist at Valley Regional Medical Center. “This reunion reminds us that anyone can help save a life by learning hands-only CPR.”

According to the American Heart Association, immediate CPR can double or triple a cardiac arrest victim’s chance of survival. Events like the lifesaver reunion highlight the importance of community education, rapid emergency response and coordinated hospital care in improving survival from out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.
